Re-energize your job search for 2010 |

Whether you are just starting to look for a new career or ready to re-energize your job search, make sure your game plan is on target.
Review the following suggestions:
1. Strategy - Evaluate your self-marketing job search strategy. Like any company looking to expand or introduce their product to the consumer, you are a product ready to embark on a new campaign to get in front of hiring managers. Your strategy will determine the effectiveness of your success.
2. Target list - Prepare a list of companies you are interested in working for. You can start out with a small list of companies and expand as your search continues. Obtain contact names from Personnel and Department Managers.
3. Networking Tools - This is the most important part of the search. Prepare a list of people you may use as a resource in your search. Review all your professional associations for leads. Sign up with Linkedin.com - one of the most powerful tools to network with new professionals and former colleagues. Engage in volunteer work that might get you closer to your prospective employer. Continually network both online and offline.
4. Internet Strategy - Although many job seekers are using this method you should always review this strategy at the beginning of each year and determine what companies are advertising for open positions. Make sure you also post your resume on niche job boards and career sites in your field. There are resume posting services that will post your resume on all the boards if you are limited for time.
5. Recruiters & Agencies - Search and gather a list of potential recruiters and agencies in your field and schedule phone conversations. Interview the companies to determine whether they can assist you in your search. They can also offer insight into the job market you are looking to apply to. After you conduct an investigation, select the companies you feel most comfortable with.
6. Resume - Always have your resume critiqued. Review the document and determine if the format is showcasing your goals, summary of qualifications, accomplishments, history and education. Does it sell you? Would you hire this person? Compare the resume with the qualifications the company is looking for. Make it easy to read.
7. Marketing tools - Develop business cards with your name and profession and pass around to prospective contacts. Create a website featuring your qualifications or use http://www.linkedin.com to showcase your qualifications. Use the different features on Linkedin to determine who is a potential contact that can assist you in your search.
8. Cover letters - Many people ask do I really need this? After surveying employment professionals we determined that some are too busy to read all the resumes but would review a document that was short, concise and to the point. We recommend to continue to use cover letters to target the individual, tell them what you can do for the firm and spell out the most significant skills that will help that company.
9. Attitude and Support - Many job seekers get tired and frustrated with their search. Every day is a new day and gets you closer to that offer. Determine what is going to keep your attitude positive. Whether it is going to the gym, church, job search course or speaking with a friend don't get discouraged. It takes time, hard work and lots of energy to find the right position. Make sure you have a few job hunting books as a resource to maintain the fortitude you need to sustain the search.
10. Diary of Search - Maintain a record of your search, how many contacts you are speaking with daily and how many hiring managers. The more hiring managers you speak with will increase your chances of landing a position. Also maintain a list of companies you are emailing your resume to.
